Netflix's live-action Avatar: The Last Airbender returns for its second season on June 25, and this time the story heads to the Earth Kingdom. If you watched Season 1 and liked what you saw — or if you've been waiting for the right moment to jump in — here's everything you need to know before the premiere.

What Happened in Season 1?

The first season introduced audiences to Aang (Gordon Cormier), a 12-year-old airbender who must master all four elements to end the Fire Nation's war. Season 1 covered the Water Book, with Aang learning waterbending from Katara (Kiawentiio) while navigating Fire Nation politics and a tense relationship with Prince Zuko (Dallas Liu).

The season ended on a pivotal moment: Aang's journey to the Earth Kingdom to begin learning earthbending — the hardest element for any Avatar to master. That's exactly where Season 2 picks up.

What's New in Season 2?

The Earth Book brings Aang to a region rife with political intrigue, hidden alliances, and dangerous secrets. Netflix describes the season as: "To end the war, Aang must master earthbending — but in the Earth Kingdom, politics, secrets, and hidden alliances are a battlefield of their own."

The biggest addition is Miya Cech as Toph Beifong — the blind earthbending prodigy who becomes one of the most beloved characters in the franchise. Toph's arrival changes the team dynamic completely, and her unconventional approach to bending makes for some of the best action sequences in the series.

Cast & Returning Characters

Gordon Cormier, Kiawentiio, Dallas Liu, and Ian Ousley return as Aang, Katara, Zuko, and Sokka respectively. Daniel Dae Kim continues as Fire Lord Ozai, and Elizabeth Yu returns as Azula.

The Earth Kingdom introduces several new faces alongside Toph, expanding the world significantly from the more contained Season 1 setting.

Also Streaming This Week

The same week as Avatar S2 brings a stacked lineup. Office Romance with Jennifer Lopez and Brett Goldstein dropped on Netflix June 5 and has been climbing the charts — a rom-com about a CEO and her airline's newest lawyer. For something darker, I Will Find You (June 18) stars Sam Worthington as an imprisoned father who discovers his murdered son may still be alive.

On the series side, The Bear returns for its fifth and final season on Disney+/Hulu on June 25 — the same day as Avatar. Two major premieres on the same date means a very busy week for streaming.

Should You Watch It?

If you're a fan of the original animated series, the live-action adaptation has earned enough goodwill by this point to be worth your time. Season 1 fixed many of the pacing issues that plagued earlier attempts at adaptation, and Season 2 has the benefit of a deeper lore and more complex characters to work with.

The addition of Toph alone makes this a must-watch — she's the character fans have been waiting for, and casting Miya Cech (who was excellent in Raising Dion) was a smart move.

With The Bear also premiering on the same day, June 25 is shaping up to be one of the biggest streaming dates of the summer. Clear your schedule.
