Apple TV+'s Cape Fear is the buzziest new thriller of the summer, and it's already halfway through its first season. Produced by Martin Scorsese and starring Javier Bardem, Amy Adams, and Patrick Wilson, this 10-episode series reimagines the classic revenge thriller for a modern audience. Here's everything you need to know.
What Is Cape Fear About?
The series follows Max Cady (Bardem), a man released from prison after 17 years for the murder of his pregnant wife. His defense attorney, Anna Bowden (Amy Adams), now runs a nonprofit dedicated to freeing wrongfully convicted inmates. Her husband, Tom (Patrick Wilson), was the prosecutor who put Cady away.
When new evidence emerges suggesting Cady may have been innocent, his release sends shockwaves through the Bowden family. Cady begins a calculated campaign of psychological terror, using social media manipulation, anonymous texts, and his newfound public fame to dismantle the family's life piece by piece.
Unlike the 1991 Scorsese film starring Robert De Niro, this version makes Cady a more sympathetic figure — not a registered sex offender, but a man with legitimate grievances and a broken system behind him. That ambiguity makes the tension far more unsettling.
The Cast
Javier Bardem plays Max Cady. The Oscar winner brings quiet menace to the role, speaking softly while letting the character's reputation do the heavy lifting. It's a departure from De Niro's explosive take, and it works.
Amy Adams stars as Anna Bowden, a defense attorney caught between her professional duty and the personal threat Cady poses to her family. Adams brings the moral complexity the role demands.
Patrick Wilson plays Tom Bowden, the prosecutor whose career was built on putting Cady away. Wilson rounds out the central triangle with a performance that balances authority and vulnerability.
Martin Scorsese executive produces, and Nick Antosca serves as showrunner. The combination of Scorsese's genre instincts and Antosca's horror background (Channel Zero, Brand New Cherry Flavor) gives the series a distinctive edge.

Should You Watch It?
Early reviews are strong. The series holds a 75% approval rating on Rotten Tomatoes (7.0/10 average) and a 68 on Metacritic. Critics praise Bardem's performance and the show's willingness to update the source material for the social media age, though some note clunky exposition in early episodes.
If you're a fan of psychological thrillers, slow-burn tension, and morally gray characters, Cape Fear is worth your time. The addition of social media manipulation and deepfake technology as plot devices gives it a timely feel that the 1991 film couldn't have anticipated.
Are you watching Cape Fear? What do you think of Bardem's take on Max Cady compared to De Niro's iconic performance?
