Inside FX's Far Cry Series: Cast, Creators & What to Expect

FX's upcoming anthology series Far Cry just added another heavyweight to its cast. Steve Buscemi (Boardwalk Empire, Fargo) has joined the adaptation of Ubisoft's blockbuster video game franchise, joining previously announced stars Rob Mac and Lizzy Caplan. Deadline broke the news July 14.

The project received a straight-to-series order in November 2025 and is in active development. Specific plot details remain under wraps, but the talent assembled signals the ambition FX is bringing to this adaptation.

Who's Behind It

The creative team brings together two of FX's most celebrated producers. Noah Hawley, creator of FX's Emmy-winning anthology Fargo, co-created the series alongside Rob Mac — the mind behind It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia and executive producer of the Emmy-winning Welcome to Wrexham. Mac is also set to star in a lead role.

Hawley is also behind FX's Alien: Earth, giving him deep roots in the network's sci-fi and anthology traditions. The two previously collaborated on Season 3 of Fargo, establishing their creative chemistry.

FX Entertainment president Nick Grad highlighted the significance of the pairing: "FX has had magnificent partnerships with Rob Mac and Noah Hawley for a combined six series and 32 seasons of television, and we couldn't be more excited that they are teaming up for Far Cry."

What to Expect

Far Cry will adopt an anthology format, with each season set in a new location featuring a fresh cast of characters — directly mirroring the structure of the video game franchise. Hawley explained the appeal: "What I love about the Far Cry game franchise is it's an anthology. Each game is a variation of a theme, the same way each season of Fargo is a variation on a theme."

"To create a big action show that can change from year to year, while always exploring the nature of humanity through this complex and chaotic lens is a dream come true," Hawley said. "I'm excited to partner with Rob and bring our shared irreverent, ambitious sensibility to the screen."

The Franchise Legacy

The Far Cry video game series has been a pillar of the shooter genre since the original launched in 2004. With six mainline entries — including the breakthrough Far Cry 3, which introduced one of gaming's most iconic antagonists in Vaas Montenegro, and the blockbuster Far Cry 5, the fastest-selling entry — the franchise has amassed over 100 million unique players worldwide. Each installment drops players into a distinct open-world setting, from tropical islands and Himalayan peaks to the Montana wilderness and the fictional Caribbean nation of Yara.

The show arrives during a golden age of video game adaptations. Following the critical and commercial success of The Last of Us, Fallout, and Arcane, studios are investing heavily in translating beloved gaming IP to the screen. With Hawley's track record of turning source material into prestige television, Far Cry has strong creative pedigree to join that conversation.

Cast and Crew to Watch

Rob Mac leads the ensemble while also serving as co-creator. Lizzy Caplan (Masters of Sex, Mean Girls, Castle Rock) joined in June 2026 in an undisclosed role. Now Steve Buscemi — the Emmy-nominated veteran known for Boardwalk Empire, Fargo (the film), Reservoir Dogs, and The Big Lebowski — brings his unmistakable presence to the cast. The specifics of his character remain under wraps, but Buscemi's ability to shift between menace and deadpan comedy makes him a thrilling addition to any project.

The series is executive produced by Mac, Hawley, Emilia Serrano, Nick Frenkel, Jackie Cohn, John Campisi, and Ubisoft Film & Television's Gerard Guillemot, Margaret Boykin, and Austin Dill. FX Productions produces.

When and Where to Watch

A premiere date has not yet been announced. Given that Hawley is currently filming Alien: Earth Season 2, expected to stream in 2027, production on Far Cry will likely follow. The series will stream on Hulu in the United States and on Disney+ internationally.
