Supergirl Bombs — 5 Superhero Shows Worth Streaming Tonight

Warner Bros. is staring down a $125 million loss on Supergirl. The Milly Alcock-led superhero film opened to just $37 million and $68 million worldwide — a disastrous debut for a movie that needed $315 million just to break even. Critics weren’t kind either: 54% on Rotten Tomatoes with audiences describing it as “Guardians of the Galaxy as a one-woman show.”

But just because Supergirl stumbled doesn’t mean you have to settle for a disappointing superhero night. Some of the best comic-book storytelling of the last decade is sitting on streaming services right now — and it delivers exactly what the big screen couldn’t.

Invincible (Prime Video)

If you want a superhero story with real emotional weight and consequences that actually land, start here. Based on Robert Kirkman’s celebrated Image Comics series, Invincible follows Mark Grayson, a teenager who inherits his father’s powers only to discover the superhero life is far darker than he imagined. Season 3 premiered in 2025 and the show has maintained a near-perfect 99% on Rotten Tomatoes across its run. Voice talent includes Steven Yeun, J.K. Simmons, and Sandra Oh.

It’s everything the new Supergirl tried to be — edgy, character-driven, and genuinely surprising — but executed with a confidence that comes from knowing exactly what it wants to say.

X-Men ‘97 (Disney+)

The biggest superhero surprise of 2024 wasn’t a billion-dollar blockbuster — it was a revival of a 1990s Saturday morning cartoon. X-Men ‘97 picks up right where the original series left off and somehow improves on it in every way: sharper writing, bolder storytelling, and animation that feels both nostalgic and fresh. The show holds a stunning 99% critics’ score on Rotten Tomatoes and was widely considered one of the best shows of 2024, period.

Season 2 is already confirmed. If you haven’t started yet, the first season is only 10 episodes — an easy weekend binge that reminds you how good superhero stories can be when character comes first.

Superman & Lois (Max)

Want to see what DC does when it gets the tone right? Superman & Lois ran for four seasons and earned a loyal following by treating Superman not as a spectacle but as a husband and father first. Tyler Hoechlin and Elizabeth Tulloch anchor a series that grounds Kryptonian powers in small-town family drama — and fans rewarded it with an 87% audience score. All four seasons are streaming on Max, and it’s the perfect palate cleanser after a big-screen misfire.

The Boys (Prime Video)

If you’re in the mood for something darker — and you haven’t already devoured all four seasons — The Boys remains the sharpest superhero satire on television. Karl Urban, Antony Starr, and Jack Quaid lead a nihilistic takedown of corporate hero culture that somehow gets more relevant with each season. Season 5 is on the way, and spin-off series Gen V has already proven the universe has legs.

Just don’t watch it with the kids. Seriously.

If you’d rather look forward than back, Netflix just announced a live-action adaptation of the Persona video game franchise, while Marvel’s Avengers: Doomsday — with Robert Downey Jr. returning as Doctor Doom — hits theaters in 2027. But before any of that, the 2026 World Cup knockout stages begin this week, and if you’re looking for sports entertainment, the tournament has been delivering one thriller after another.

What to Watch First
