Sonny Calvento is a film director based in Manila. At the age of 19, he began working as a drama writer for television before transitioning into film and commercial directing. His first short film Excuse Me, Miss, Miss, Miss (2021) became the first Filipino short film to premiere at Sundance Film Festival, going on to screen at Locarno Film Festival, Palm Springs ShortFest, Shanghai International Film Festival, and forty other film festivals, in addition to winning the Audience Award in Locarno Shorts Week 2023 of the Locarno Film Festival. His next short film Primetime Mother (2023) premiered in Toronto International Film Festival and the AFI (American Film Institute) Fest. Sonny is interested in tackling the sometimes-farcical life in the Philippines. He has also directed commercials for Netflix, Grab, Sprite and many more.
