Coronation Street Season 6, Episode 26: Mar 31, 1965

Ken is livid about the story in the paper, annoyed that David has let the family down even though he was always viewed as the golden boy. A bad-tempered Len bickers with Jack and Annie over the story. Stan has been put off David by the allegations. Minnie wonders what Wormold wants with Ena.

6 Jan 1965

Elsie forms a plan to squeeze her repair costs out of Wormold. The Barlows are ostracised due to David's alleged bribe. Ena hints to Minnie about her inheritance.

11 Jan 1965

Elsie is in a bad mood about Ena and takes it out on Dennis. Elsie knows that Ena will have something up her sleeve and determines to get in first. She's thrown when Ena is friendly to her and disarms her. Elsie nevertheless gives her a list of repairs she wants doing to No.11. Hilda is furious when Stan fills the house with paper. Albert gets the name of a paper merchant that Stan can do business with.

13 Jan 1965

Jack tells Albert, Stan and Charlie about Ena's mysterious intervention. Mrs Ainsworth calls at 15 Mawdsley Street. She lets rip at Len about his supposed disgusting history of boozing and womanising. Len is mystified at what she means and matters aren't helped when Irma turns up, flaunting herself at him to win her bet with Dennis.

18 Jan 1965

Swindley puts the prizes in the lucky dip barrel in the middle of the shop with a gents' watch being the star prize. Ena takes Minnie to task for failing to spot Norma Gee moving in with Len. Norma is pleased with her room and says she'll make no demands on Len. Annie is pleased that Len turned down April.

20 Jan 1965

Dennis worries about the rent rise but Elsie cites an identical situation where Dot Greenhalgh's sister-in-law won her case in court. Ena tries to find out from Stuart what the committee's decision is likely to be but he's unable to assist. She sends Minnie out to find out what the Bold Street Mission's attendances are like. Len continues to enjoy Norma's food.

25 Jan 1965

Ena wonders if there's been any sign of activity from the Tanners. Dennis tells Elsie about the notice. Elsie is calm, deciding not to row with Ena but to get everyone on their side. The clasp on Annie's gold bracelet is broken. Elsie starts her campaign with Annie, telling her "in confidence" that Ena is evicting them in four weeks. Annie immediately starts to spread the news, opining that the Tanners are being victimised.

27 Jan 1965

Stan gets up early in the morning to speak with milkman Bert Lodge about the possibility of jobs with his firm. Elsie and Dennis create homemade damp patches and other household problems, hoping to give Ena the impression that No.11 has been falling to pieces for years. Ena sees through it all and tells Minnie she intends to get the Tanners out of the house. The residents anticipate yet another clash between the two. In the Rovers, Ena gives Elsie her notice in writing. Elsie goes for Ena in the snug and the fight spills out into the Street. The residents take sides. Ena tells Elsie she wouldn't be throwing her out if Swindley wasn't throwing her out.

Feb 15, 1965

Florrie introduces Norman to Elsie and the other residents. Emily seeks a volunteer driving instructor. Charlie starts working in the Coronation Street area.

Feb 17, 1965

Norman grows closer to Elsie as they spend time together. Emily bamboozles Ken into accompanying her on a driving lesson. Annie tries to give Florrie a warning.

Feb 22, 1965

Len asks Irma to provide Jerry with some diverting company. Florrie enjoys having a man in her life again. Elsie meets Norman in secret at his hotel.

3rd March 1965

Lucille is given the part of the maid in "Way of the World", in a joint production with the boys' Grammar School. Emily's instructor Mr. Hopwood takes her out for a coffee. George Dickinson accuses Jerry of having an affair with Irma. Jerry refuses to return and is chased for the £30 he owes him. Len writes Mr. Dickinson a cheque and he leaves.

Annie prepares to cast a disapproving eye over Lucille's friend Roger. Elsie fights nerves as she attends a job interview. Emily contemplates a new look.

Mar 17, 1965

Lucille refuses to eat meat to Annie's annoyance. Val worries as no one wants to buy her salon equipment. Emily is horrified to discover that Elsie is her new assistant at Gamma Garments. Hilda feels sure Stan is playing away when he disappears for the afternoon. Roger Wain enlists Lucille to help him look after elderly people. Stan turns up at home with a black eye.

Mar 22, 1965

Hilda becomes convinced that all the evidence points to Stan's infidelity. The Barlows receive a pram for the imminent arrival. Swindley checks on Elsie and Emily's compatibility.

5 Apr 1965

Len takes Val to hospital in his van. Ken feels completely useless. Jerry worries about his future. Len gets a contract from Arnold Jenkinson to do a conversion job for one of his supermarkets. Ken discovers that if the twins are born before midnight he'll get tax relief on them. Willie Piggott is fined £150 for bribing Ken. Val gives birth to a girl and a boy. The Walkers break open the champagne for the residents to celebrate the birth of the first-ever set of twins on the Street.

Apr 19, 1965

Piggott makes enquiries about Jerry. Albert seeks a companion for the Easter Monday football match. Val refuses to let Ken take her out for the day.

Apr 21, 1965

Jerry seeks advice before giving Piggott a decision about the job. Albert takes Lucille's survey. Dennis amuses Elsie with his efforts to go upmarket.

Apr 26, 1965

David's return to Coronation Street delights Irma and Albert. Ken and Val adjust to having the twins at home. Dennis catches the attention of his female clientele.

26 April 1965

Peter and Susan come home. No.9 is awash with visitors as the neighbours come over for a look at them. With the weather getting better, Hilda thinks about having the house done up.

Charlie searches for his missing cash while Hilda goes on a spending spree. Irma turns down David's offer of a night out to work at the Rovers. Florrie asks Len to build her some storage in the yard.

Hilda sweats over how to repay Charlie's twenty pounds. Emily wrestles with nerves ahead of her driving test. David catches Irma flirting with a delivery lad.

May 17, 1965

Hilda is filled with shame as Charlie faces the music with his supervisor. Emily decides to play Len at his own game. The street prepares for the Queen's visit to the town.

May 26, 1965

Albert relays his discovery of Charlie's whereabouts. The Barlows celebrate the twins' christening. Ena believes that Florrie will struggle once away from the street.

Jun 2, 1965

Lionel Petty fails to make a good first impression on his customers. Florrie feels sentimental about leaving the street. Dennis learns of Sandra's matrimonial designs on him.

Ena spends Whit Monday at home, waiting to be contacted. Lionel's idea of customer service impresses nobody. Emily suggests a day trip for the regulars.

Jun 9, 1965

Ena learns about her extended family and receives a surprising invitation. Lionel refuses to mix socially with his customers. Val objects to Ken always leaving her minding the twins.

14 June 1965

Len shocks his neighbours by displaying open hostility towards Tom. Ena makes preparations for her trip to America. Lionel is puzzled by the lack of custom at the shop.

16 June 1965

Elsie chastises Len for his attitude towards Tom. Emily advises Lionel to introduce a personal touch to his customer service. Sandra plans to lure Dennis to her birthday party.

Dennis fails to wriggle out of attending Sandra's party. Ena attends the American consulate to sign her paperwork. Stan boasts about giving up cigarettes.

Jun 23, 1965

Minnie gets emotional about Ena's departure for Nebraska. Dennis grows disconcerted by Sandra's attentions. Stan nods off in the Rovers after a sleepless night.

Jun 28, 1965

Emily panics when the coach company mixes up her booking for the Rovers' trip. Dennis begins to enjoy Sandra's adulation. Lucille asks Harry if she can remain with the Walkers upon leaving school.

30 Jun 1965

Emily leads the trip to the Blue John Mines with Dennis, Sandra, Irma, David, Hilda, Stan, Charlie, Minnie, Albert, Elsie, Len, Jack and Annie in attendance. Arthur Walker looks after the pub. The residents view the mines, 850 feet below ground level. Irma grows frightened of scaring David off. Dennis escorts Sandra. Lucille sees Harry off at Liverpool. On the coach back, David presents Irma with an engagement ring from the cavern. She accepts it.

Emily is surprised by Elsie's reaction to being dismissed. A diary clash causes a rift between the Walkers. Dennis seeks to escape his misery working for Lionel.

Jul 26, 1965

Stan involves Len and Charlie in his plan to brew his own beer. Minnie has a showdown with Clara, the Mission's new cleaner. Annie eyes the position of Lady Victuallers' chairperson.

Jul 28, 1965

The Walkers roll out the red carpet for lady victualler Nellie Harvey. Len, Stan and Charlie keep their home brewing efforts under wraps. Minnie and Clara get to know each other.

Aug 9, 1965

Jerry returns to a hostile reception from Len. Albert cheers on Jack in the bowls final. The smell of Stan and Charlie's home brew pervades the street.

Aug 11, 1965

Len reacts angrily upon discovering Jerry sleeping in the yard. Stan and Charlie's bottles of homemade beer explode. Jack takes umbrage at the contents of one of Annie's birthday cards.

Aug 16, 1965

Sandra decides on a change of approach to her pursuit of Dennis. Minnie and Emily suffer the effects of consuming Charlie's special brew. Lucille arrives back from Ireland.

Aug 18, 1965

The men's fishing trip gets Charlie wet under the collar. Sandra anticipates Dennis's reaction as she debuts her new look. An unkempt old man searches the neighbourhood for Albert.

Aug 23, 1965

Len plots a special surprise for Jerry on his birthday. Lucille takes her first step into the world of work. Albert welcomes Ted Bates into his home.

30 Aug 1965

Ted's daughter writes to Albert asking him not to interfere. Lucille gets four 'O' Levels - Science, English, French and Geography. Ted is hurt by his daughter's indifference to him. The residents are shocked and shaken when No.7 collapses.

1 Sep 1965

The residents fear the rest of the Street will fall down. The Barlows seek refuge for Peter and Susan in the Rovers as everyone moves out of their homes. The police rope the house off and Mr. Wormold arrives. Annie worries when Lucille doesn't return after a night out with friends. The menfolk start to shift the rubble in case Lucille is under it. She arrives home safe. The Surveyor detects no subsidence. The collapse was caused by a faulty beam over the bay window. Len is given the contract to secure the house. Ted decides to go back to the home and leaves. Lucille cries over No.7. Wormold feels it isn't worth the £300 repairs and tells Len to pull it down.

Sep 13, 1965

Jack surprises Annie with a trip to the Fox and Hounds in Wilmslow. Elsie hankers for a new man to enter her life. David reassures Stan over the escalating wedding plans.

Sep 15, 1965

Elsie makes a connection with a man at the Fox and Hounds. Irma tires of Hilda's constant chatter about the wedding. Lucille suffers a setback at a job interview.

Sep 20, 1965

Elsie flees the scene of the accident and turns up on Len's doorstep. Hilda apologises to Irma for interfering. News of Ena's return date reaches Minnie and Emily.

Sep 22, 1965

Stan persuades Len to talk to Elsie again. Jerry chooses the wrong time to voice his misgivings. Emily and Minnie discuss a welcoming party for Ena.

Sep 27, 1965

Annie faces a dilemma when the police question her. Relations between Elsie and Len hit a new low. Sandra eyes a job as Miss Nugent's assistant.

Sep 29, 1965

Minnie is disappointed not to receive a birthday card from Ena. Emily agrees terms of employment with an excited Sandra. Elsie decides to face her gossiping neighbours.

Oct 11, 1965

Ena puts herself forward to investigate the surveyor's presence on the street. Dennis resolves to improve his physique. Val tries to take an interest in current affairs.

Oct 13, 1965

Annie and Ena adopt different approaches to solving the mystery of the street's future. Dennis's fitness regime leaves him exhausted. Val decides to broaden her horizons.

Nov 8, 1965

The residents make final arrangements for the bonfire. Len and Jerry patch up their quarrel. Emily discovers that the gowns for the parade require alterations.

10 Nov 1965

Emily worked until 2.00am getting the fashion show ready. The residents gather at the Mission Hall to watch the event. Irma, Sandra and Lucille model the garments and get mixed up back stage. Allan drops woodwork when he discovers girls. The show turns into a fiasco. Elsie is horrified to discover Dennis has bought 108 Christmas trees.

17 Nov 1965

The nappies which Val put out to dry start to smoulder, filling the house with smoke. Val returns home and manages to put out the fire. Val’s furious with Ken but Annie tells her not to be too hard on him. Sandra lets Dennis store boxes of crackers in the Gamma Garments' storeroom after hours. Emily is cross with her when she finds out. Val breaks down at the thought of what could have happened to Peter and Susan. The Christmas trees are delivered, filling No. 11.

Dec 6, 1965

Hilda is upset that Irma wants to get married in secret. Len has an idea for the residents to join the newlyweds' celebrations. Jack demands money for Lucille's board and lodgings.

8 Dec 1965

Irma and David go to get married. Jack gets Arthur Walker to look after the Rovers, as the residents leave, on mass, for the reception. David and Irma are married at Ridgeway Street Registry Office. Jack, Annie, Stan, Hilda, Len, Elsie, Ena and Minnie hide behind a screen at the reception and surprise the Barlows. Arthur leaves Lucille alone in the Rovers whilst he places a bet. Val is chatted up by a man called Frank Turner in the Street. He steals cigarettes from the shop, and gets Lucille to serve him at the Rovers. He makes her feel uncomfortable. Stan makes a speech at the reception. Turner tells Jack that Lucille shouldn't be serving behind the bar at sixteen and makes him see that he's going to blackmailed.

Dec 13, 1965

Jack tries to allay Annie's fears that Turner has them cornered. Albert feels slighted by David's secret wedding. Charlie informs Minnie of his imminent departure.

Dec 15, 1965

The strain of being blackmailed takes its toll on Jack. Charlie finalises his affairs and bids farewell to Minnie. David and Irma view a three-bedroom house.

20 Dec 1965

Annie confides in Len and Stan about Frank Turner's blackmail. Lionel agrees to step into Jack's shoes. David and Irma celebrate receipt of the deposit for their new house.

22 Dec 1965

David suffers an injury during a football match. Len speculates about the identity of Turner's assailant. Annie relishes her role as lady chairman at the Licensed Victuallers' ball.

29 Dec 1965

David hopes to continue as social officer for Weatherfield Athletic. Lionel cuts down on giving credit at the shop. Minnie is intrigued by Ena's mystery parcel delivery.
