In 1930s Germany, a young writer named Amsel moves into a dilapidated apartment where all previous tenants committed suicide. Lelio Giorgi asks the eccentric Dr. Mongeri for help regarding supernatural phenomena terrifying his pregnant wife, Luisa. He reveals that Luisa's deceased first husband is haunting them from beyond the grave, claiming possession of her and separating her from their newborn child. Believing that residual life forces can turn a corpse into a vampire, Mongeri advises cremating the body. After confronting and exorcising the spirit—which temporarily possesses Luisa and accuses her of poisoning him—the cremation is performed, finally ending the nightmare.
