The presence at the 10th Tuscolano Police District of the only witness to a brutal murder committed on the edge of a wood is the cause of an unexpected and tragic ambush by two killers who, in an attempt to kill the witness, fatally shoot Carlo, Inspector Gori's ex-boyfriend, and wound Officer Raffaele Marchetti. The investigation into the murder that took place in the woods leads the inspectors of the 10th Tuscolano to discover that the murderers are a group of expert hunters from the area, who met in Kenya during a hunting safari.

The analysis of the Russian mole's footprints exonerates the magistrate Castelli and reveals the true identity of the secret informant: Katarina Kasparova, the girl long sought by Inspector Gori and then believed to be dead.
