Bessonov has recovered at Hannah's farmhouse, where Hannah is alone following the death of her son and her husband. Bessonov writes a poem for Hannah, but she confesses that she cannot read. He reads the poem to her, and they share an emotional embrace. An armed soldier enters the house and sees them. It is Hannah's husband, very much alive. In St. Petersburg Vadim and Katya are married. Dasha is very pregnant and waits for Telegin, who is working. Impatiently, she decides to go out and walk to meet him. As the war deepens, Dasha aids her friend Liza, who serves on a hospital train. Telegin endures captivity, escapes, and reunites with Liza in a military hospital, but his heart remains with Dasha. Katya reconciles with her husband but falls in love with soldier Roshchin. After recovering, Telegin heads back to Petersburg in search of Dasha.
