The story unfolds on the insight of Tenali Raman's desire to outwit the Rajguru at every turn, and become the royal court jester of Vijayanagara. The king Krishnadevaraya is impressed by Raman's wit, and appoints him as the king's royal jester. Raman, therefore, accomplishes both these ends, with his clever schemes.

Rajguru has a slave bonded by a contract, which states that the slave cannot free himself from servitude unless he pays the mentioned amount of gold coins to Rajguru. The issue is brought to the kind King Krishnadevaraya, but the he is helpless due to the influence of the contract. In the royal court of Vijayanagara, the northern king arrives and challenges the southern subjects to a wrestling match. Tenali Raman agrees to fight the match because of the fear of humiliation.
