When Hilda suddenly uncovers the real and terrible meaning of their discovery, a new light is thrown on them.

Set in 15th century France, the story deals with a young man who flees from the Royal Guard after trying to avenge the death of a friends. He takes refuge in the home of the Sire de Maletroit, who mistaking him for another guard who is in love with his daughter, orders an immediate marriage. The daughter, realizing he is the wrong man and a fugitive, is unwilling to reveal his identity.
